1. Our commitment
We want our band to be a friendly, inclusive and enjoyable place to make music.
Everyone involved with the band — members, young people, parents/carers, volunteers, musical
staff and committee members — is expected to treat others with respect, kindness and
consideration.
This Code of Conduct should be read alongside our Band Inclusion Policy and Safeguarding
Policy.
2. As members of the band, we will
● Treat everyone fairly and with respect, regardless of age, background, ability, identity or
experience.
● Help create a welcoming environment where people feel able to participate and learn.
● Work cooperatively with other members, facilitators, volunteers and the Committee.
● Be punctual and let the appropriate person know as soon as possible if we are going to be
late or absent.
● Take a reasonable share of responsibility for rehearsals, performances, setting up and
packing away.
● Come prepared for rehearsals and engagements, including bringing the music and
equipment we need.
● Look after band instruments, music, uniform and other property entrusted to us, and
report damage or problems promptly.
● Observe the band's dress code for performances, concerts and other events where a
particular standard of dress has been agreed.
● Follow reasonable instructions from musical staff and those responsible for organising
band activities.
● Represent the band positively when taking part in performances, events or activities.
● Respect the band’s confidentiality where information is private or sensitive.
● Use social media and other online spaces responsibly and respectfully when referring to
the band or its members.
● Declare any actual or potential conflict of interest to the Committee and, where
appropriate, take no part in decisions relating to that conflict.
3. Behaviour
We expect everyone to:
● Speak and behave respectfully towards others.
● Treat other people with dignity.
● Challenge discrimination and exclusion appropriately.
● Take care with language, jokes and behaviour, particularly when children and young
people are present.
● Respect personal boundaries.
● Help create a positive environment in rehearsals, performances, trips, social activities and
online spaces.
The band does not accept bullying, harassment, intimidation, discriminatory behaviour,
threatening or abusive behaviour, inappropriate physical contact, or behaviour that places
another person at risk.
Alcohol or illegal drugs must not be used during band rehearsals.
4. Children and young people
Everyone involved with the band has a responsibility to help keep children and young people
safe.
Adults working or volunteering with young people should:
● maintain appropriate and professional boundaries;
● avoid unnecessary one-to-one situations with young people;
● use agreed band communication channels rather than private contact;
● avoid favouritism;
● use appropriate language and behaviour;
● follow the band’s Safeguarding Policy.
Any safeguarding concern must be reported in accordance with the Safeguarding Policy.
5. If there is a concern
If someone has a concern about behaviour or conduct within the band, they should speak to a
Committee member and agree on next steps.
The Committee will, if necessary, consider the circumstances and, where appropriate, seek to
resolve matters constructively.
Serious or repeated breaches of this Code may result in action by the Committee, which may
include an informal discussion, agreed steps to improve behaviour, a formal warning, suspension
from activities or termination of membership.
Safeguarding concerns will be dealt with through the Safeguarding Policy and may be referred to
external agencies where appropriate.
